Play Downtown Nekketsu Baseball Monogatari - Yakyuu de Shoubu da! Kunio-kun Online

Summary

When I first saw the cover of Downtown River City Baseball Story, I was struck by how different it feels from the usual Kunio‑kun brawls. It’s the third Kunio title on the Super Famicom, dropping in Japan on December 17, 1993, and it flips the series on its head – Kunio isn’t the protagonist at all. In fact, he’s the lone student in the Nekketsu school who dons an all‑white uniform, a visual cue that sets him apart from the rest of the cast. This oddball setup stayed unique in the Downtown Nekketsu line until the 2012 release of Riki Densetsu, making the baseball adventure a rare, stand‑alone experiment in the franchise.

Storyline

In Downtown Nekketsu Baseball Monogatari – Yakyuu de Shoubu da! Kunio‑kun, the spotlight shifts from Kunio to Sanjūrō Sugata, a friend of Kunio who steps up as captain of Nekketsu High’s baseball team. The original captain, honor‑student athlete Tatsumi Tachibana, suffers a shoulder injury that forces him out of the Japan National High School Baseball Tournament, leaving his girlfriend and team manager Rika Asano heart‑broken.

Motivated by Rika’s distress and his own crush on her, Sugata takes the helm, with second‑year Haruka Nanase becoming vice‑captain. When Rika can’t fulfill her duties, Kuniko Ashino—Kunio’s biggest fan—fills the manager role, sparking a rivalry with commentator Kazumi Hasebe. The tournament is announced by Todō Kounosuke, who declares that Nekketsu will compete under Sugata’s leadership, aiming to topple Reihō Academy and other rivals.

Among the opposing schools are Horyō Academy’s third‑year Kōjirō Murasaki, the “Beautiful Swordsman” with violet hair, and his childhood friend‑rival Raiji Tsuge from Hattori Academy, both skilled in swordplay. Hattori also fields freshman Tsukasa Mochizuki, the younger brother of Shun Mochizuki, adding further challenge to Nekketsu’s quest for the championship.
