Summary
Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls swaps the series’ classic side‑scroll beat‑em‑up for a straight‑up fighting game, borrowing the familiar 8‑way stick and six‑button layout you’d recognize from Street Fighter II. Each fighter has a handful of punches, kicks and flashy "Overkill" finishers that trigger a unique death animation when the right basic attack lands.
The title offers four distinct play styles: an arcade‑style Tournament mode, a two‑player Vs. Battle, a plot‑driven Quest where you can tweak strength and defense, and a Watch mode that lets the AI spar for you. A Dossiers screen holds character bios, while Options let you fine‑tune controls and difficulty.
Twelve combatants fill the roster – the two Lee brothers, eight Shadow Warriors and two boss characters, with Dominique and the Shadow Master unlockable via secret codes on the SNES and Genesis. Each fighter sports four to six special moves, and the game even lets you adjust attributes in Quest mode.
Visually, the sprites stay true to the cartoon series, backed by a hot‑rock soundtrack and over 130 sound effects. Critics called it a competent but unoriginal Street Fighter clone, noting its appeal to younger players while labeling it an average entry in a crowded fighting‑game market.
Storyline
Double Dragon V – The Shadow Falls (often just called Double Dragon V) follows the uneasy reunion of the Lee brothers. Billy Lee was left at the Dragon Dojo as a baby, raised by the Oldest Dragon to become a disciplined Dragon Master who only fights when necessary. His twin, Jimmy Lee, grew up under the Shadow Master’s cruel tutelage, believing the Shadow Master was his father and being groomed as a villainous Shadow Boss until the Shadow Warriors betrayed him, prompting Jimmy to join Billy as a Double Dragon.
The Shadow Master, the ultimate antagonist, seeks to blanket the world in darkness. He can shapeshift, teleport, and wields a detachable scythe‑sword, imprisoning failed warriors in the Shadow Mural. His most loyal minion, Dominique, a whip‑and‑knife‑armed dominatrix, serves as a sub‑boss before the final showdown. The brothers also face a colorful roster of foes: the cannibalistic mutant Jawbreaker; crystal‑bodied cyborg Icepick with ice‑powered sword and dagger; rock‑inspired undead skeleton Bones, who carries a laser rifle; the brutal street fighter Sickle with twin red sickles; French mercenary Blade wielding crimson gauntlet blades; the chaotic ex‑military Trigger Happy with a hand‑mounted blaster; the rocket‑armed cyborg Countdown, now fighting for survival after betraying his master; and the mercenary TV personality Sekka, who fights for pay and keeps her own agenda.
