Summary

I first ran into *Doomsday Warrior* (the Japanese‑only “Taiketsu!! Brass Numbers”) when hunting 90s fighting titles on the SNES. Developed by Laser Soft, a Telenet Japan offshoot, it landed in Japan in late 1992 and reached North America a few months later, riding the wave sparked by Street Fighter II. The match‑up feels classic: every fighter can punch, kick, jump and trigger a close‑range special by mixing those actions, and victorious bouts hand out Ability Points that you can spend on Arm Power, Leg Power, Defense, Vitality, or Soul Power. The point‑spending adds a light RPG flavor rarely seen in its era. Though Famitsu gave it a modest 24/40 and Power Unlimited called it a “boring beat‑em‑up” with a 75% score, the game earned a nostalgic spot on Nintendo Classic’s service in 2021, keeping its quirky combat alive for new players.

Storyline

In Doomsday Warrior, you play as one of seven members of the Doom Squad, a group serving the evil sorcerer Main. The chosen fighter turns against the squad to protect Earth, and must battle each former comrade.

The opponents include hot‑tempered Sledge, ex‑soldier Layban, metal‑band muscle Amon, half‑plant hybrid Daisy, fire‑breathing martial artist P. Lump, alien lizardman Grimrock, and shapeless liquid‑metal Nuform. Each has distinct attacks and personalities.

After defeating the six remaining squad members, the hero faces three final foes: Shadow, a darkness creature that mimics the player; Ashura, Main’s strongest warrior wielding demonic power; and finally Main himself, who flies, summons lightning, fire and light, and wields a sword of light before retreating into the sky.
