Summary

The Super Nintendo version of Doom hit shelves on September 1, 1995, just as the console was winding down. Published by Williams Entertainment, it earned the distinction of being the first SNES title to carry an M rating – a club it shares only with Mortal Kombat 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, also from Williams. The game lives in a bright red cartridge and runs on a Super FX 2 chip, but it doesn’t use the original Doom engine; instead Randy Linden built a custom Reality engine to squeeze first‑person action onto the 16‑bit hardware. Critics were split: some praised the ambitious port, while others complained about dimmer graphics and sluggish controls compared to the PC original. Despite its quirks, the SNES Doom remains a memorable footnote in retro gaming history.

Storyline

Doom on the SNES follows a lone marine who, after assaulting a superior officer, is reassigned to a dead‑end post on Mars. The Union Aerospace Corporation’s secret teleportation experiments on Phobos and Deimos go catastrophically wrong, opening a gateway to Hell and causing the Deimos base to vanish while Phobos is overrun with demons. A squad of marbles is sent to Phobos, but all but one are slaughtered, leaving the marine to fight through possessed humans and hellish creatures across the three episodes – “Knee‑Deep in the Dead,” “The Shores of Hell,” and “Inferno.”

In the first episode he battles Barons of Hell and a teleporter that knocks him unconscious, emerging with only a pistol. The second episode sees him defeat a massive cyberdemon on Deimos and discover the moon floating above Hell, prompting a descent to its surface. The final episode has him destroy a cyber‑spider demon, open a portal to Earth, and step through to find the planet already under invasion, setting the stage for Doom II.
