Summary
The Super Nintendo version of Doom hit shelves on September 1, 1995, just as the console was winding down. Published by Williams Entertainment, it earned the distinction of being the first SNES title to carry an M rating – a club it shares only with Mortal Kombat 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, also from Williams. The game lives in a bright red cartridge and runs on a Super FX 2 chip, but it doesn’t use the original Doom engine; instead Randy Linden built a custom Reality engine to squeeze first‑person action onto the 16‑bit hardware. Critics were split: some praised the ambitious port, while others complained about dimmer graphics and sluggish controls compared to the PC original. Despite its quirks, the SNES Doom remains a memorable footnote in retro gaming history.
Storyline
In the SNES version of Doom, the story is stripped down to its essentials, with most of the background delivered through the manual and brief text screens. An unnamed marine is reassigned to a dead‑end post on Mars after he defies an order to fire on civilians, and the Union Aerospace Corporation’s secret teleport experiments soon turn deadly. A base on Phobos calls for help while Deimos vanishes, prompting the marine to join a combat team, secure the perimeter, and watch his comrades wiped out, leaving him armed only with a pistol and driven by revenge.
The first episode, “Knee‑Deep in the Dead,” has the marine battling demons and possessed humans in Phobos’s waste facilities, culminating in a showdown with two Barons of Hell that guard a teleporter to Deimos. After the fight he is knocked unconscious, awakens with just his pistol, and continues onward. In “The Shores of Hell,” he fights through corrupted research labs on Deimos, defeats a massive cyberdemon, and discovers the moon hovering above Hell, prompting a daring rappel to the infernal surface.
“Inferno” sees the marine traversing Hell itself, destroying a cybernetic spider‑demon that orchestrated the invasion, and opening a portal back to Earth. Stepping through, he finds the planet already overrun, and the final episode “Thy Flesh Consumed” depicts his first strike against the Earth‑bound invaders, setting the stage for Doom II.
