Summary

Death Brade, the Japanese SNES port of Mutant Fighter, trims the arcade’s sprawling cast down to five fighters – the Fighter, Amazoness, Hercules, Minotaur and the Beast – while still throwing in a handful of non‑playable foes like the Hydra, Doppelganger, Pazuzu and the Archmage. The game lets you battle twelve opponents in a row, and if you survive you’re crowned ruler of the kingdom. It offers a solo mode against the AI and a quirky two‑player co‑op where both humans face two AI opponents at the same time, sharing the screen’s limited space. Each character builds up Energy for special moves, and the combo system can string together 19 distinct attacks, giving each fighter a unique feel. Despite these quirks, the German magazine Video Games slammed the title with a 22 % score, calling out its grainy graphics, thin sound, choppy animation, sparse stages and clunky combat.

Storyline

In Death Brade, the kingdom’s monarch has fallen, prompting a grand combat tournament to decide the next ruler. The tournament is the sole means of choosing a new sovereign after the king’s death.

The player must face twelve opponents in a series of one‑on‑one battles. Defeating each challenger in turn secures victory, and the champion is crowned the new ruler of the realm.
