Summary

Dark Half is a tactical RPG for the Super Famicom that throws you into an isometric battlefield where every move matters. The game is split into chapters, and each chapter is played from the perspective of either Roda, the self‑styled hero, or Rukyu, his dark counterpart, forcing you to switch sides as the story unfolds.

What makes the experience stand out is the dual‑campaign structure: you’re guiding two opposing forces toward a final clash, and you get to see the same world through both a righteous and a villainous lens. Westone, better known for the lighter‑hearted Wonder Boy series, teamed up with RPG heavyweight Enix to pull this off.

Combat is random‑encounter, turn‑based, and played on a square‑based grid. Both sides rely heavily on magic—Roda summons one‑time spells from scrolls earned after battles, while Rukyu taps into a unique resource called Soul Power. Party members can join either leader, adding depth to the strategic choices you make each turn.

Storyline

Dark Half (SNES) weaves a mythic tale where Light and Darkness are born from one another, inseparable from the start. The great demon of darkness, Rukyu—later known as Satan—appears before all other beings. The divine hero‑god Roda descends into Rukyu’s realm to vanquish him, only to be struck down and presumed dead. Yet Roda cannot die so easily; he swears to defeat Rukyu once and for all. While Roda gathers his resolve, Rukyu roams the world as a death‑bringing sorcerer, hunting the hero.
