Summary
D‑Force drops you into the cockpit of an Apache helicopter and thrusts you into a classic vertical scrolling shooter. You blast through swarms of enemies, and when you take down the massive red gunships you’re rewarded with power‑ups that upgrade your guns and unlock homing missiles, turning the chopper into a true sky‑borne artillery platform.
Each stage is punctuated by a mid‑boss and a full‑blown boss, both of which must be destroyed before the game lets you move on. What keeps the action fresh is the alternating level design: one moment you’re in a high‑octane "Shooting Mode" tearing through enemy formations, the next you’re dropped into an "Exploration Mode" that feels like a fantasy realm, where no power‑ups appear but you can shift altitude to navigate the strange terrain.
I love how the altitude mechanic adds a subtle layer of strategy, forcing you to decide when to stay low for firepower and when to rise for a better view of the bizarre, otherworldly backdrops. The blend of relentless shooting and occasional exploratory pauses makes D‑Force a uniquely varied experience on the SNES.
