Summary

Cyber Knight is a niche sci‑fi RPG for the Super Famicom that blends interstellar exploration with strategic robot battles, aimed squarely at seasoned role‑players. The game throws you into a galaxy of random encounters, and combat—though packed with melee strikes, missiles and guns—unfolds at a deliberately slow pace, demanding careful positioning.

Navigation is handled from a top‑down view as you pilot the Swordfish starship, scan planets and drop three crew members onto the surface. Each crew member commands a distinct Module, a giant robot with its own stats and pilot skill set. There’s no money system; instead, defeated Berserkers drop "NeoParts" that you bring back to the ship’s lab to unlock stat boosts and new weaponry.

Battles take place on a 6×6 grid in side‑view, turn‑based fashion. Unlimited ammunition is balanced by consumable "options" and dual hit‑point pools—one for the pilot, one for the robot—so losing either destroys the Module. Healing relies on a limited stock of repair and first‑aid kits, replenished only when you return to the Swordfish.

A sequel, Cyber Knight II: Chikyū Teikoku no Yabō, arrived two years later, and although the titles never saw an official Western release, an English fan‑translation by Aeon Genesis makes the experience accessible. Famitsu gave the original a respectable 30/40 score.

Storyline

Cyber Knight (often just called Cyber Knight) opens in the 24th century when the starship Swordfish is ambushed by space pirates. In a desperate move the crew fires the jump drive without a set destination, flinging them to the galactic core where the ship is badly damaged and only 26 crew members survive, six of whom are combat‑qualified: a commander, two soldiers, a mechanic and a doctor, backed by six giant Module suits. Their first mission takes them to an Earth‑like world populated by large, 1992‑level humans whose president and wife have assumed king and queen roles despite a democratic system, while hostile robots aim to wipe out humanity. The survivors later find the human colony Farworld under siege by relentless mechanical aliens called Berserkers, prompting a series of quests that include trading for a universal translator, braving a lava planet, and using hyperdrive to hop between strange new worlds as they search for a way home.
