Summary
Cutthroat Island on the SNES drops you into a swash‑swash world where you can pick either Morgan Adams, rapier‑wielding and fierce, or the buccaneer William Shaw with his trusty sword. The game lets you toggle between a precise Swordplay mode and a more chaotic Brawling style, and even supports two‑player action for a friendly rivalry. Each of the ten stages throws a fresh twist at you – from fleeing prison guards in a quarry cart on level two to clinging onto a runaway horse‑drawn carriage on level five. Along the way you can snag knives, bombs, torches, pistols and other oddities that spice up the combat. When it launched, hidden treasure chests unlocked a real‑world contest, a gimmick that felt right at home with the film’s pirate vibe. Critics were split: GamePro’s Grease Monkey called out repetitive grunt sounds but praised the character art and soundtrack. The title’s rights changed hands in 2018, landing with Liquid Media Group.
Storyline
In 1619 a pirate cutter called the Sea Devil seized the Spanish cargo ship Santa Susanna, but a storm drove the Sea Devil onto the uncharted Cutthroat Island. The wreck left only one survivor, Fingers Adams, who managed to escape the island. Before dying he tore the treasure map into three pieces and handed each fragment to his legitimate heirs.
By 1688 the story follows Morgan Adams, a wanted pirate lady who already possesses one piece of the torn map. Determined to locate the remaining fragments, she must battle both the law and rival treasure hunters who guard the missing pieces. Her ultimate goal is to reunite the map and claim the hidden treasure buried on Cutthroat Island.
In the SNES game CutThroat Island you control Morgan as she sets out on this quest, using the map fragment given by her father to guide her search for the other pieces and the fabled loot.
