Summary
Cliffhanger on the Super Nintendo feels like a stripped‑down Double Dragon, with side‑scrolling brawler action set against snowy Alpine backdrops. You spend most of the time dodging or punching thugs, picking up knives and guns that litter the cliffs, then sprinting or climbing over gaps before the screen locks down for a classic beat‑’em‑up showdown. Every few stages a boss blocks your progress, culminating in a showdown with Qualen, the terrorist leader. Scattered money bags boost your score, and the game caps at a surprisingly precise 958,845 points if you’re meticulous enough. Critics at the time slammed the SNES version for its clunky controls, generic graphics and a limited move set that made landing hits feel hit‑or‑miss, even dubbing it the Worst Movie‑to‑Game of 1994.
Storyline
In the SNES game Cliffhanger, a treasury plane carrying a huge cash shipment is ambushed by terrorists and shot down by an FBI interceptor. The surviving hijackers broadcast a distress signal, which the protagonist Gabe answers, unaware that the mayday is a trap. Once on the scene, the terrorists seize Gabe’s partner, Hal, and use him as leverage, demanding the stolen money back. Gabe must fight through levels that mirror key moments from the film, retrieving the cash to secure Hal’s release. The cartridge version strings together the action with animated cutscenes, while the Sega CD edition sprinkles brief movie clips between stages.
