Summary
I still get a kick out of the way Interplay completely rebuilt the engine for ClayFighter 2: Judgment Clay in under six months, swapping the "primitive" code of the original for a brand‑new set of programming tools. The team even used those tools as a stress test, resurrecting Tiny from the first game to prove the new pipeline could handle the notoriously tricky clay‑molded sprites – Aire called Tiny "the best looking character in the game." They also hired a fresh stop‑motion crew, which disappointed the producer but gave the sequel a distinct look, edging toward a pseudo‑3D vibe instead of the cartoony feel of its predecessor. Critics noticed the changes: GameFan scored it 287/300, GamePro praised an improved combo system while noting rougher background art, and Entertainment Weekly gave it a solid B for its darker tone. Total! even placed the title at #77 on its Top 100 SNES list, calling it a moderately good beat‑‘em‑up with comedic fighters.
Storyline
ClayFighter 2: Judgment Clay centers on Mudville, the town scarred by the clay meteor that fell in the original game. The booklet’s antagonist, Dr. Generic Kiln, finally arrives in his aircraft loaded with the meteor’s residue. He spreads the clay dust across Mudville, spawning a fresh roster of fighters. After the defeat of N. Boss—the final boss of the first ClayFighter—Kiln proclaims himself grand master of the town. To find his successor, he launches the C‑2 tournament, challenging anyone who can claim the title of Mudville’s next grandmaster.
