Summary
Chuck Rock on the Super NES, published by Sony Imagesoft, delivers a colorful side‑scrolling adventure that feels fresh even by today’s standards. The game is split into five distinct worlds—Jungle, Cave, Water, Ice and Graveyard—each packed with three to five levels and a final boss showdown, all layered with smooth parallax scrolling.
Gameplay mixes classic platforming with clever puzzles: Chuck can thrust his belly, kick enemies, and hurl rocks or boulders that double as shields or temporary platforms. Dinosaurs and spiders patrol the stages, while friendly creatures like flying lizards (which Chuck can eat), a ride‑able brontosaurus, and a crocodile‑turned‑seesaw add quirky shortcuts.
Development kicked off in October 1990, with Robert Churchill designing the titular caveman, Lee Pullen handling the graphics, Chris Long programming, and Matthew Simmonds composing the upbeat soundtrack. Critics praised the title’s vibrant visuals, tongue‑in‑cheek humor, and the seamless blend of action and brain‑teasing elements.
Storyline
Chuck Rock takes place in a whimsical pre‑historical Stone Age world populated by neanderthals, woolly mammoths, saber‑tooth tigers, dinosaurs and other primeval monsters, evoking the vibe of One Million Years B.C. and The Flintstones. The hero, Chuck, is an overweight, square‑jawed caveman with a punk‑style mohawk, a limited vocabulary, and a talent for picking up and hurling rocks. He also fronts a rock band as guitarist and singer, performing alongside his attractive wife Ophelia Rock and a long‑haired dinosaur who handles the bass.
One ordinary day while Chuck watches TV, his wife Ophelia is knocked unconscious and kidnapped by the jealous village bully Garry Gritter. Gritter drags her to his hideout in a creepy dinosaur graveyard, shattering Chuck’s peaceful routine and leaving him furious. The gamesdb notes that you must help Chuck set things right.
Determined to rescue Ophelia, Chuck journeys through primeval jungles, murky swamps, frozen lakes, an ice‑capped mountain summit, dark caves, and even the belly of a gigantic dinosaur. Along the way he confronts a host of prehistoric creatures and environmental hazards, battling his way toward the graveyard to save his wife.
