Summary
Chrono Trigger feels like a love letter to the golden age of SNES RPGs, thanks to the legendary "Dream Team" behind it – Sakaguchi, Horii and Toriyama – who blended Final Fantasy storytelling, Dragon Quest design, and Toriyama’s iconic art. The battle system, dubbed Active Time Battle 2.0, lets each character act as soon as their speed timer hits zero, and the on‑map fights keep enemies in plain sight, so you can plan combos like Crono’s Cyclone + Lucca’s Flame Toss without ever leaving the field.
Time travel is the game’s playground: seven eras unfold as you hop through portals, time gates and the Epoch machine, and every choice ripples forward, spawning twelve distinct endings. After the final showdown, New Game Plus lets you carry over levels, techs and gear (minus money) while forcing you to hunt down story‑critical items again, such as the Masamune sword.
Technically, the 32‑megabit cartridge gave the team room for richer graphics and a three‑disc soundtrack led by Yasunori Mitsuda, with a cameo from Nobuo Uematsu. Animated monster sprites and seamless map‑to‑battle transitions were possible only because Square skipped the canceled Super Famicom Disk Drive and stuck with a robust ROM.
The game launched in the U.S. on August 22, 1995 and quickly became a bestseller, moving 2.5 million copies worldwide by 2006. Critics praised its visible enemies, combo mechanics, vibrant art and unforgettable music, cementing Chrono Trigger as a timeless classic.
Storyline
Chrono Trigger unfolds on an Earth‑like world that spans a prehistoric age of dinosaurs, a medieval realm of knights and magic, and a post‑apocalyptic future where humans survive in underground domes. The heroes can hop between eras using the End of Time as a hub and, later, the Epoch – a time‑machine vehicle that lets them travel to any period without first stopping at the hub. Six main characters (plus an optional seventh) hail from different ages: the sword‑wielding teen Crono, Princess Marle (Nadia) of Guardia, inventor Lucca, the robot Prometheus (Robo), the prehistoric chief Ayla, the cursed knight Frog, and the enigmatic sorcerer Magus, who was once Prince Janus of the fallen Kingdom of Zeal.
The adventure begins at the Millennial Fair in 1000 AD when Marle’s pendant sends her through a malfunctioning teleporter to 600 AD. Crono and Lucca follow, rescue the kidnapped Queen Leene with Frog’s help, and return to the present, only for Crono to be falsely accused of kidnapping Marle and sentenced to death. A desperate escape lands the trio in 2300 AD, where they discover a ruined future devastated by the alien parasite Lavos, meet Robo, and are guided by the sage Gaspar in the timeless End of Time.
Guided by Gaspar, the party learns that Magus summoned Lavos in 600 AD, battles him, and travels to the prehistoric era to aid Ayla against the reptilian Reptites. Their journey then takes them to 12,000 BC, where the floating Kingdom of Zeal harnesses Lavos’s energy; the Prophet—revealed as Magus—fails to kill Lavos, which slaughters Zeal and kills Crono before Schala saves the remaining members. After resurrecting Crono with a Chrono Trigger device, the group confronts the Black Omen, defeats Queen Zeal, and finally battles Lavos, learning that the creature feeds on DNA and energy before razing the planet in 1999 AD.
With Lavos slain, the heroes celebrate at the Millennial Fair’s final night. Depending on choices, Magus may join the party to search for his sister Schala, and Crono’s legal troubles are cleared if he is revived. The friends then return to their own times, each carrying the memories of a world they saved from a temporal catastrophe.
