Summary
Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes, often just called Crimson Echoes, is an ambitious fan‑made ROM hack of Square’s classic SNES RPG. Created by the international team Kajar Laboratories, the project re‑uses the original Chrono Trigger engine and Active Time Battle 2.0 system, offering the same blend of physical attacks, magic, items and HP management. Over five years of development the hackers added fresh maps, updated sprites, and extra minigames—including a Coliseum mode inspired by Final Fantasy VII and a gambling casino. The hack also preserves every original character while delivering new story content, ten possible endings, and roughly thirty‑five hours of gameplay.
By early 2009 the game was about ninety‑eight percent complete and set for a May 31 release, when Square Enix issued a cease‑and‑desist on May 8, forcing cancellation. The team planned to distribute the final build as an IPS patch for use with SNES emulators, and leaked alpha, beta and release‑candidate builds still circulate online. Despite its unofficial status, Crimson Echoes remains a celebrated example of fan dedication to the Chrono series.
Storyline
The story starts with Crono, Marle, and Lucca at a political summit between Guardia and Porre when an assassin strikes. They chase the assassin into the Denadoro Mountains where Lucca’s prototype Time Egg glitches and flings them to 2305 A.D. In the future they meet Belthasar at his Chronopolis research hub, who warns them of a looming danger. He sends them back to the Ocean Palace ruins of 11,995 B.C. There they encounter Magus, still hunting for Schala, and a mysterious villain named Kasmir.
Kasmir resurrects Schala, steals the early Masamune and prolongs the Mystic War by fifty years. The party rescues Frog (Glenn) from 605 A.D. and learns that King Zeal has been revived by Lavos through the Frozen Flame, intent on mastering Lavos and rebuilding his kingdom. They travel to 64,999,995 B.C. to claim the Dragon’s Tooth and confront Zeal at the ancient Lavos impact crater. Zeal’s Atash Kedah spell shatters the group across time.
Marle awakens in 1 A.D. among surviving Reptites, Lucca and Robo appear in 2305 A.D. joining a sentient‑robot rebellion, and Crono, Magus and Glenn fight in 1005 A.D. against a second Dinopolis. The heroes regroup, stop the Atash Kedah spell, and restore the proper human timeline. In a final clash at 11,995 B.C., they defeat Zeal, imprison him with Magus, and retrieve the Masamune. Belthasar now holds the Frozen Flame and begins Project Kid, hinting at the future Time Devourer.
