Summary
Xardion lets you juggle three distinct robot warriorsâAlcedes the red insectâlike biped, Triton the oceanic mech, and Panthera the catâlike quadrupedâeach hailing from a different world. Their abilities are purposeâbuilt: Panthera can slip through tight corridors, Triton excels at underwater navigation, and Alcedes packs raw firepower, while each character tracks its own health and specialâability meters.
The game treats these robots like a tagâteam roster; you can swap on the fly, and if one falls youâre whisked back to the level start with that robot fully healed, ready to try a different approach. Defeating foes grants experience points, and every levelâup expands both your life pool and the pool of specialâability points, adding a subtle RPG flavor to the platforming action.
Near the climax, the trio is superseded by Xardion, a hybrid mech that inherits every skill from its predecessors and pushes them further. However, Xardion starts at level one, forcing you to backtrack and grind earlier stages to unlock the power needed to clear the final barrier.
The mecha designs were crafted by industry veterans Moriki Yasuhiro and Hajime Katoki, with creative input from Gainax, and the English script was penned by former Wizardry writer Robert Woodhead, giving the game a uniquely polished sciâfi vibe.
Storyline
The three inhabited worlds of the AlphaâŻ1 Solar System have been locked in a sevenâmonth war when a new menace emerges from the artificial planet NGCâ1611. The AlphaâŻ1 Federation scrambles its best defenses, dispatching two transforming mecha and a selfâaware robot to the hostile world with orders to destroy the invadersâ power source and, if possible, locate the legendary weapon Xardion.
NGCâ1611 was built by an unnamed scientist under the banner of âProject New Frontier,â a failed attempt to create an immortal planet. Violent monsters quickly made the world uninhabitable, and after the scientistâs daughter died, the planetâs supercomputers were left with a cryptic directive to âprotect my daughter.â Lacking a real child, they projected a holographic image of her into a protective capsule and later launched an invasion against the AlphaâŻ1 system.
Three champions answer the call: Triton, a humanoid wielding an upwardâfiring rifle; Alcedes, a fourâarmed beastâbot mage with a staff and antenna laser; and Panthera, a catâlike quadrupedal robot that can slip into tight spaces and fire headâmounted guns. After Panthera is destroyed by concentrated hydrochloric acid, the ultimate cyborg mecha, Xardion, takes its place, firing a powerful blast from its arm. The game, known in the West as Xardion, follows these heroes as they set aside their planetary rivalries to confront a common alien threat.
