Summary
Chō Jikū Yōsai Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie lets you pick one of three iconic pilots—Hikaru Ichijyo, Maximilian Jenius, or Milia Fallyna Jenius. Your choice tints the VF‑1 Valkyrie’s markings and determines which weapon type you wield in Fighter, GERWALK, and Battroid forms, and each transformation grants a brief window of invulnerability that feels oddly satisfying.
Power‑ups are tied to a "Maximum Power" icon that drops from defeated foes, boosting the current weapon through three levels. Alongside score, 1‑UP, and shield bonuses, taking a hit not only chips away at your shield but also demotes your weapon’s power, forcing you to stay on the offensive. The game forgoes traditional lives; when your shield collapses you must use a continue to restart the level.
A quirky twist is the "Minmay cannon": if you sit idle, your ship glows, and touching certain enemies recruits them as an invincible ally that attacks for you. The soundtrack cleverly remixes classic Macross themes, and the title even snagged Electronic Gaming Monthly’s Best Japanese Shooter award in 1994, with other reviewers rating it in the high 80s to 90s percent range.
Storyline
Choujikuu Yousai Macross – Scrambled Valkyrie (often just called Scrambled Valkyrie) is set in the Parallel World timeline that stems from the film Macross: Do You Remember Love. This branch also includes the games Macross 2036, Macross: Eien no Love Song and the OVA Macross II, and it takes place after the 2010 events of Do You Remember Love but before the launch of the SDF‑2 Megaroad‑01 shown in Flash Back 2012.
In the year 2009 the human race is locked in a three‑way war against the Zentradi and the Meltlan alien factions. After a space‑fold accident strands the Macross fortress and part of South Ataria Island at the edge of the Solar System, the ship begins its return to Earth. During a brief clash with Zentradi forces, young pilot Hikaru Ichijyo rescues idol singer Lynn Minmay; their bond deepens while they are stranded aboard the ship. Back in Macross City Minmay is captured by the Zentradi, and Hikaru and officer Misa Hayase are forced to return to a devastated Earth, where only an ancient song and Minmay’s voice may decide the war’s outcome.
