Summary

Castlevania: Vampire's Kiss on the SNES feels like a love‑letter to the original Rondo of Blood, yet it walks a tightrope between faithful remake and stripped‑down conversion. Konami kept the core platforming and gothic atmosphere, but the cartridge’s limits forced them to swap the PC Engine’s save system for a password scheme and trim the level count, leaving the castle a bit more linear. The game still offers branching paths and three distinct endings depending on whether you rescue Annet and Maria, only Maria, or lose them both, which adds a surprising layer of replay value. Critics at the time were split: some praised the familiar beat‑‘em‑up action, while others slammed the lack of Mode 7 flair, the tiny protagonist sprite, and the overall difficulty that feels harsher than its predecessor. In the end, Vampire’s Kiss stands as a nostalgic, if imperfect, snapshot of mid‑90s Castlevania design, appealing mainly to collectors who appreciate its quirks.

Storyline

Set in medieval Transylvania, Castlevania: Vampire's Kiss takes place several hundred years after the legendary hero Simon Belmont defeated Count Dracula and sealed him away. The passage of time has caused the people to forget the terror of the undead, allowing a few depraved individuals to revive the Count, who now sleeps in his coffin by day and preys on victims by night.

Seeking revenge on Simon’s bloodline, Dracula kidnaps Richter Belmont’s girlfriend Annet and her little sister Maria, imprisoning them in his castle and baiting Richter into a rescue. Armed with his ancestor’s sacred whip, Richter storms the castle to free the girls and seal Dracula away for good.
