Summary
Captain Commando brings the classic side‑scroll beat ’em up vibe to the arcade with a four‑player setup that feels just like Final Fight, but with its own twist. You pick from Captain Commando, Mack the Knife, Ginzu the Ninja, or Baby Head, each sporting a signature move—electric palms, sub‑sonic knives, a ninja sword, or a mech‑suit that dishes out extra damage. The control scheme is simple: an eight‑way stick, a punch button, and a jump button, plus a dash by double‑tapping left or right, letting you weave through crowds of enemies while snatching food, firearms, or shurikens for a quick power boost. The arcade version packs nine stages, from a bank to a circus, and even a final showdown on the planet Callisto, with each level ending in a boss fight.
When the game landed on the Super NES in ’95, it was trimmed to two players, fewer on‑screen foes, and the iconic mech‑suit was cut, plus a few visual tweaks for censorship. Despite the compromises, the SNES port still earned mixed but respectable scores—from 72/100 in Hyper to 80% in Consoles+—and later found new life in the Capcom Beat ’Em Up Bundle and Capcom Arcade Stadium, letting a new generation experience its over‑the‑top action.
Storyline
Set in a futuristic 2026 Metro City—the same neon‑lit backdrop of Capcom’s Final Fight—Captain Commando and his three Commando Companions take on a world overrun by crime. The heroes battle genetically engineered Super Criminals, foes who wield hidden, evil super‑powers that go beyond ordinary mortals. Players punch through a string of iconic locations, from a bank and museum to a circus and aquarium, before the action rockets off‑planet. The final showdown occurs on Callisto, where the tyrannical alien mastermind Scumocide (known as Genocide in Japan) commands the Super Criminal army. Together, the team strives to erase crime from both Earth and the galaxy in this classic beat‑’em‑up adventure.
