Summary
Breath of Fire II drops you into the role of the last Dragon‑clan warrior, surrounded by a cast of quirky companions and a world brimming with mystic items, memorable monsters, and exotic locales. The game leans heavily into strategy and spellcasting, promising hours of compelling action as you chase a growing evil across a vibrant SNES landscape.
Presented from a top‑down perspective, movement is four‑directional and the interface has been overhauled into a text‑based menu, complete with a new Monster Meter that hints at how likely an encounter is in any given area. Random battles pepper the journey, and while you can only field four characters at a time, each hero boasts a Personal Action that unlocks shortcuts, destroys obstacles, or avoids traps.
A standout feature is the town‑building system: three carpenters let you donate money to erect houses, and up to six elemental Shamans can be recruited and fused with party members to grant fresh forms and abilities. This village‑crafting adds a layer of personalization rarely seen in 16‑bit RPGs.
Combat follows a classic turn‑based rhythm, with actions ordered by agility and a Formation mechanic that shifts speed, defense, or attack bonuses. Defeating foes yields experience, leveling up characters and expanding their spell repertoires, while progress is saved via battery‑backed memory at dragon statues.
Developed by many of the same Capcom veterans who built the original, the sequel’s art was entirely redrawn by Tatsuya Yoshikawa and its score composed by newcomer Yuko Takehara. Capcom USA handled the North American release, and the title sold roughly 350,000 copies in Japan, earning mixed‑to‑positive reviews that praised its length, music, and shaman system despite some criticism of graphics and dialogue. It later earned spots on several “best of” lists, cementing its place as a memorable, if imperfect, entry in the SNES JRPG canon.
Storyline
Breath of Fire II (often just called Breath of Fire 2) picks up five centuries after the original game and follows 16‑year‑old orphan Ryu Bateson. After his father and sister vanish and the villagers forget who he is, Ryu becomes a Ranger‑for‑hire and teams up with Bow, a dog‑person thief, to clear Bow’s name after a false theft accusation. Their quest leads them to recruit a colorful cast – cat‑fighter Katt, pangolin brawler Rand, winged princess Nina, monkey‑person trickster Sten, frog‑prince Jean, plant‑girl Spar and the optional immortal sorceress Bleu – each joining at set story points and offering unique abilities for battles and puzzles. The party uncovers a demon outbreak tied to the Church of St. Eva and the forgotten Dragon Clan, of which Ryu is a hidden member capable of dragon transformations. They battle possessed foes, rescue kidnapped allies, and gather items like the Famous Flute and Therapy Pillow to enter the Great Wise Tree Gandaroof’s mind and defeat the demon Aruhameru. The climax unfolds in the Grand Church of St. Eva, where the high priest Habaruku (disguised as Father Hulk) attempts to sacrifice the dragon‑clan member Patty to unleash his god. Ryu’s newfound Anfini dragon form defeats the demon Barubary and the god Deathevn, while the dragon‑clan matriarch Valerie reveals herself as Ryu’s mother and offers a final choice. Depending on the player’s actions, the ending varies: Ryu may sacrifice himself, Ganer can pilot the floating TownShip to seal the mountain, or a game‑over occurs if the final cave is avoided. The story blends classic RPG exploration with a deep mystery about memory, lineage, and the lingering threat of ancient demons.
