Summary
Bombuzal, known in the U.S. as Ka‑Blooey, lets you toggle between a classic overhead grid and a quirky isometric angle, which instantly changes how you plan each of its 130 puzzles. The core mechanic is simple yet unforgiving: you must stand on a bomb to light it, then hop away before the blast, and only the tiniest bombs can be ignited without killing you. Larger bombs explode in expanding zones—small ones affect the tile they sit on and the four orthogonal neighbours, while the biggest wipe out a 13‑tile pattern that reaches diagonally as well. Some levels let you haul bombs along Rail tiles, setting up chain reactions that clear the board without a single misstep. The level layouts were crafted by a roster of British game legends—Jon Ritman, Andrew Braybrook, Geoff Crammond, and Jeff Minter—adding a distinct flavor to each stage. Adding a dash of danger, the roaming foes Sinister and Dexter patrol the map, turning left or right respectively, and any contact is instant death. The game first appeared on the Super Famicom in late 1990, hit the SNES as Ka‑Blooey in ’92, and even resurfaced on the Nintendo Switch’s Classics service in 2021, earning mixed scores from Famitsu.
