Summary

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (commonly just Sailor Moon) lands on the SNES as a side‑scrolling beat ’em up where you pick one of the five original Sailor Soldiers and brawl through stages packed with series villains. Each heroine sports a chargeable special that wipes the screen, but the core combat is punch‑kick‑throw, a design inspired by pro‑wrestling magazines rather than magical spells.

The development team was literally drawn from the franchise itself: producer Jōji Yuno oversaw Angel’s effort, Kazuko Tadano handled the cover art and character poses, Yukihiro Kitano turned hand‑drawn sketches into pixel sprites, and Takanori Arisawa supplied a soundtrack that feels like the anime’s music yet fights for space on the cartridge. Voice actors from the show recorded new lines, but the SNES’s memory limits forced the spoken attacks to be brief and disabled during co‑op play.

Originally released on the Super Famicom in August 1993, the game received a French‑only European launch in November 1994, making it one of the few Sailor Moon titles to see an official overseas release.

Critics were split: scores ranged from 21/40 in Famitsu to 84/100 in Superjuegos. Reviewers praised the faithful art direction and vibrant audiovisuals, but lamented the slow pacing, limited move set, repetitive enemy hordes, and cramped sound quality, often likening the experience to a watered‑down Final Fight.

A sequel, Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon R, followed later in 1993, continuing the franchise’s brief but memorable SNES adventure.

Storyline

In Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon (commonly just called Sailor Moon) the player assumes the role of one of the five original Inner Sailor Guardians, led by Usagi Tsukino, the titular Sailor Moon. The team battles the Dark Kingdom—a malevolent force that once shattered the ancient Moon Kingdom and now seeks to drain human life energy and seize the Silver Crystal to free Queen Metaria. Their campaign spans multiple Earth locations, with the enemy’s base pinpointed at Point D on the Arctic Circle, as they unleash monsters to corrupt human spirits. Queen Beryl commands the Dark Kingdom’s forces, aiming to plunge the planet into chaos and claim the crystal’s power. The five Sailor Soldiers must unite to protect the Earth and punish the darkness in the name of the Moon.
