Summary
Zoku: The Legend of Bishin (often just called Bishin Densetsu Zoku) is a quirky hybrid that mixes high‑speed racing with classic side‑scroll beat‑'em‑up action on the Super Famicom. Only released in Japan, it lets you choose between Koji, a street‑wise driver, or Lisa, his tough‑talking female counterpart, as you barrel through maze‑like highways.
The driving sections feel like a stripped‑down F‑Zero or Spy Hunter, with tight time limits that force you to keep moving. If your car takes too much damage, the race abruptly ends and you’re thrown into a Final Fight‑style brawl, trading punches and kicks with the thugs littering the road.
A hidden versus mode adds replay value, pitting Koji, Lisa, and a roster of bosses—including the ninja twins Miki & Aki, the fiery Flare, and the enigmatic Ryoko—against each other in head‑to‑head combat.
Storyline
Bishin Densetsu Zoku is set in a rebuilt Neo Tokyo after a new Great Depression in 2010 and a catastrophic Mount Fuji eruption in 2020. The city survives but becomes overrun by motorcycle gangs, the most powerful being the all‑female Bishin crew led by Ryoko. The story follows two young heroes: Koji, a 20‑year‑old former professional boxer, and Lisa, a 16‑year‑old ex‑high‑ranking Bishin member who has left the gang. After they are ambushed, one is kidnapped and the other must rescue the partner using Koji’s Cobra 429 car, battling through a series of themed zones. The route takes them from a desert ruled by Lidera, through a forest with Roller and Dozer, a volcano guarded by Lei‑Fan, a super‑highway defended by Miki & Aki, a construction site with Miyabi, a bayside highway ruled by Flare, and finally the streets of Neo Tokyo where Ryoko awaits as the final boss.
