Summary
BioMetal feels like a love letter to classic side‑scroll shooters, especially the R‑Type lineage. I’m constantly swapping between six weapon types that drop from destroyed pods, and the power‑up cycle works just like the one in Raiden – though a few weapons actually cancel each other out, forcing you to think twice before grabbing the next upgrade. The ship’s defensive system is a quartet of spinning orbs that form a shield; while it’s active, your gel charge drains, but you can also hurl that stored gel at enemies for a burst of offense. The soundtrack is a quirky split personality: the North American and European releases pulse to four techno remixes from 2 Unlimited’s *Get Ready!* album, while the Japanese version swaps in an entirely different score. Critics gave BioMetal an average reception, but the blend of familiar mechanics and its distinct audio make it a memorable SNES shooter.
Storyline
It is the year GC 232, when a galaxy‑spanning war has drained the Milky Way of its natural resources. The Galactic Council dispatches a fleet of starships to the nearby planet UP457 to locate new supplies. Their mothership, the MF‑92GX Halbard, and its crew—including young pilot Kid Ray and biologist Anita—are the only hope.
During the reconnaissance, the fleet is ambushed by a race of half‑machine, half‑animal beings the Council dubs “BIOMETAL.” These creatures are the result of an experiment that fuses animal aggression with machine efficiency, and a supercomputer warns they could overrun the galaxy in just 32 hours.
The Halbard’s fighter, armed with the experimental Gel Analog Mutant weapon, is tasked with eradicating the Bio Metal threat before it becomes unstoppable. The player pilots the MF‑92GX Halbard to destroy the hostile experiment and secure the galaxy’s future.
