Summary
MechWarrior (known in Japan as BattleTech) brings the tabletop universe to the Super NES with a striking Mode 7 first‑person view that feels far more immersive than the flat‑shaded PC original. The game’s roster is a mix of familiar and brand‑new BattleMechs: light units like the agile Spider and jump‑jet‑packed Wasp, medium‑class Phoenix Hawk and Wolverine, heavy‑duty Warhammer and Battlemaster, and the singular, lumbering Atlas that dominates as the only assault mech. Each class plays to its strengths—flanking, balanced combat, raw firepower, or sheer brute force—giving players a clear tactical choice before diving into the hordes of giant robots. Critics praised the atmospheric perspective, with Super Gamer awarding an 88 % score and Power Unlimited noting the “excellent” action despite a slow start. User ratings hover around the middle of the pack, reflecting a solid but niche classic for retro mech fans.
Storyline
Battletech on the SNES follows MechWarrior Herras Ragen, whose family was slaughtered in 3017 by the rogue unit known as the Dark Wing Lance.
Ten years later, in 3027, the player takes control of Herras and begins a campaign across the system, gathering intelligence from a network of contacts and a bar‑room ally on a nearby planet.
The ultimate goal is to track down the Dark Wing Lance’s leader, eliminate the remaining members, and avenge his family’s death.
