Summary
Bahamut Lagoon is a tactical role‑playing game that fuses classic grid‑based battles with a surprisingly deep dragon‑raising system. You command a squad of four characters, and can maintain up to six different parties, each paired with its own dragon that fuels special attacks and class abilities. The combat itself is split between ranged spells that can be stacked for extra power and close‑quarters actions where each unit gets a single move and attack per turn, making positioning and timing crucial. What really sets the game apart is the way dragons live almost like pets of their own. You feed them items to boost stats, and their loyalty shifts depending on whether they like the food – a disliked treat still makes them stronger, just less faithful. Dragons evolve into new forms as they grow, but you can only issue simple commands like “Come!” during battle, leaving their AI to decide the rest. If a dragon falls, its party loses access to special moves for the remainder of the map, so keeping them alive becomes a strategic priority. The development story is as quirky as the gameplay. Hitoshi Sasaki, known for his work on Final Fantasy VI, dreamed up the concept and initially pitched it under the working title “Final Fantasy Tactics.” A fresh team of Square newcomers, led by director Kazushige Nojima and scenario writer Motomu Toriyama, turned that idea into a tactical adventure that emphasizes both battlefield tactics and the emotional bond with dragons. Noriko Matsueda’s soundtrack adds an orchestral flavor despite the Super Famicom’s limited sound hardware, using reverb and spatial tricks to make the music feel larger than the cartridge could normally allow. The result is a game that feels both familiar to RPG fans and distinct in its blend of strategy, creature care, and atmospheric music.
Storyline
Bahamut Lagoon takes place in the floating world of Orelus, where sky‑bound continents known as lagoons drift above the clouds. The peace of the kingdom of Kahna is shattered when the Granbelos Empire launches an invasion. Captain Byuu, leader of the elite Dragon Squad, manages to push the invaders back in a hard‑won victory, but the triumph is short‑lived as Kahna soon falls under enemy control. As the game’s silent protagonist, Byuu rallies his forces for a relentless counter‑offensive, guiding the squad through a campaign to reclaim the kingdom and halt the Granbelos threat.
