Summary
Art of Fighting (sometimes just called AoF) stands out on the SNES for its early‑era fighting mechanics that still feel fresh. The game introduced a spirit gauge that drains whenever you unleash a special move, forcing you to weigh offense against vulnerability, and a desperation attack that appears when your health is low and the bar flashes. Taunting isn’t just for show either – it saps your opponent’s spirit meter, adding a subtle mind‑game layer. Visually, the title was a showcase: as fighters close in, the camera zooms dramatically, revealing bruises and cuts that grow with each hit, a detail that earned it praise even from critics who dismissed the gameplay. Only Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia are available in the single‑player story, while the versus mode opens the roster to eight more combatants, a limitation that many reviewers called a drawback compared to contemporaries like Street Fighter II. Despite the mixed reception, the spirit gauge, super moves, dashes and screen scaling pioneered here became staples that later defined the genre and even helped seed the crossover world of The King of Fighters.
Storyline
In 1978, the martial artist “Invincible Dragon” Ryo Sakazaki teams up with his best friend Robert Garcia to rescue Ryo’s sister Yuri, who has been kidnapped by the mob boss Mr. Big in South Town. Using their Kyokugen Karate, the duo battles a series of thugs and eventually confronts Mr. Big himself.
After defeating Mr. Big, he points them toward Yuri’s location, only to reveal that she is being held by a mysterious assassin wearing a tengu mask. Ryo and Robert overcome the masked foe, but Yuri steps in before Ryo can deliver the final blow, leaving the identity of the killer unrevealed. The story ends on a cliff‑hanger as Yuri is about to disclose who the masked man really is.
