Summary

Aretha the Super Famicom (often just called Aretha) delivers a classic console‑style RPG experience on the SNES. You guide Ariel and her party across a first‑person world map, wandering forests, mountain paths, caves and the occasional town, then dive into an all‑directional random‑encounter battle screen where foes can strike from the front, side or rear. The turn‑based combat mixes physical and special attacks, letting you plan tactics based on enemy positioning. Though the series never left Japan, the Super Famicom entry cracked the console’s top‑ten bestseller list in early 1994, a testament to its solid design and charm. It sits between the original trilogy and two sequels—Aretha II: Ariel no Fushigi na Tabi and Aretha III—plus the side‑story Rejoice: Aretha Ōkoku no Kanata, all released between 1991 and 1995.

Storyline

Aretha follows Ariel, a ten‑year‑old girl living with her wise grandmother in a modest house north of a mountain range. After a distant war saw an evil ruler raze a mighty king’s castle, the grandmother sends Ariel on a seemingly simple errand: cross the forest to the town of Nineveh and meet a mysterious person. The journey quickly expands beyond a delivery, as Ariel discovers the ancient magic of Aretha and begins training her newfound powers. Along the way she uncovers the truth about her own identity while the looming threat of the villain’s forces looms over the land. Ultimately, Ariel must wield her magic in the final battle against the lingering evil that once destroyed the king’s stronghold.
