Summary
Aretha II – Ariel no Fushigi na Tabi stands out on the SNES thanks to its all‑directional random‑encounter system. Battles unfold from a first‑person view, and foes can strike from the front, side or even the rear, forcing you to watch the enemy’s orientation as closely as your own stats. After each fight you may collect mysterious "souls" – a special currency that lets you forge custom armor, adding a layer of personalization rarely seen in early ’90s console RPGs. Though it launched in Japan on 26 November 1993, the title quickly vaulted onto the Super Famicom’s top‑ten bestseller list in early 1994, cementing its reputation among fans of tactical turn‑based combat. Its legacy is being revived in the upcoming Aretha Collection 1993‑1995, slated for modern consoles on 30 July 2026, giving a new generation a chance to experience its unique battle mechanics and item‑crafting twist.
Storyline
Aretha II – Ariel no Fushigi na Tabi follows the young princess Ariel, who has been magically turned back into a ten‑year‑old. She is the granddaughter of a wise old grandmother who gives her a simple task: travel through the forest to the town of Nineveh and meet a certain person.
During the journey Ariel hones her magical abilities, preparing herself for the ultimate battle against an encroaching evil. The trek also serves as a rite of passage, letting her prove that even a child‑sized ruler can wield true power.
After reclaiming her throne, Ariel’s kingdom enjoys a brief period of peace, but two wandering adventurers encounter a mysterious evil being that threatens the realm and then vanish without a trace. Her servants report the incident, and after consulting her grandmother, Ariel decides to set out again, reuniting with her trusted companions to uncover the source of this new menace.
