Summary

U.N. Squadron, known in Japan as Area 88, feels like a love letter to classic side‑scroll shooters while tossing in a surprisingly deep shop system. You start each run with $3,000 and a modest F8 Crusader, then rack up cash by blasting enemy formations and spend it on a roster of planes and special weapons that you can even sell later if you change your mind. The three mercenary pilots—Shin Kazama, Mickey Simon, and Greg Gates—each pilot a distinct aircraft, giving the game a subtle but noticeable personality shift depending on who you pick. What really sets the SNES version apart is the way the energy bar works: damage chips away at your health, forcing you to balance aggression with smart upgrades. The graphics and sound, praised by critics at the time, still hold up, and the game’s legacy lives on in rankings from IGN, Complex and Total! that still list it among the best SNES titles.

Storyline

The SNES game Area 88 follows three mercenary pilots—Shin Kazama, Mickey Simon, and Greg Gates—who are hired for a dangerous job. Their target is the terrorist organization Project 4, and the trio’s mission is to stop its activities, mirroring the plot of the original manga. The title was released in Japan under the same name, Area 88, and stays true to the series’ focus on mercenary pilots and combat operations.
