Summary

Arabian Nights: Sabaku no Seirei-ō (often just called Arabian Nights) is a Super Famicom RPG that blends classic turn‑based combat with a quirky card system. Each battle begins with the option to play a Barrier Card, which can boost allies or cripple foes for three turns, and the effects range from modest buffs to extreme tricks like “Double Magic Attack” or “Absolute Critical.” You can hold up to 16 cards, draw a fresh one after every fight, and even chase down rare level‑0 cards that deliver a one‑turn power spike before fading.

Strategically swapping cards becomes a core puzzle, especially since even low‑level enemies can pull strong cards, forcing you to decide whether to break an opponent’s barrier now or save a high‑level card for a tougher showdown later. The protagonist Shukran also carries a journal that auto‑records events; empty entries hint at unfinished quests, letting you piece together the next objective at your own pace.

The game supports multiple scenarios and endings based on your choices, adding replay value despite its Japan‑only release. Famitsu gave it a modest 26/40, noting the ambitious mechanics but suggesting the execution felt uneven.

Storyline

Arabian Nights – Sabaku no Seirei Ou follows the legend of the Djinn king Ifrit, who was once defeated by a man named Suleiman. After a mysterious magical being destroyed Suleiman’s house and weakened Ifrit, Suleiman sealed the djinn in a Contract Ring, promising freedom once a thousand wishes had been granted by a thousand hands. A century later, an orphan girl named Shukran discovers the ring in the desert town of Bazaar and releases Ifrit, using the final, 999th wish to ask for peace in her homeland. Because Ifrit cannot stray far from the ring, Shukran and the djinn travel together across the desert, seeking to fulfill that wish. The player assumes the role of Shukran, accompanied by Ifrit, on a quest to bring peace to her desert homeland.
