Summary

The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes (often just called Lethal Foes) is a Super Famicom platformer that lets you swing through timed checkpoints with Spider‑Man’s signature web‑fling. The game’s villain roster reads like a fan‑letter to Marvel, pitting you against the likes of the Spider‑Slayers, Beetle, Lizard, Mysterio, Alistair Smythe, Green Goblin, Scorpion, Venom, Doctor Octopus and Carnage, while cameo heroes such as Human Torch, Speedball and Iron Fist pop up in between stages. What really catches the eye is the cover art, hand‑drawn by comic legends Mark Bagley, Karl Kesel and Paul Mounts, giving the cartridge a collectible feel. An odd but fun twist lets you hook up a Barcode Battler II to scan codes and unlock extra content, a gimmick that feels straight out of ’90s tech‑craze culture. Despite its ambitious roster, the game earned a modest 21/40 from Famicom Tsūshin, hinting at a mixed reception among Japanese players.

Storyline

After a series of setbacks, Doctor Octopus breaks out of prison and coerces Curt Connors into assisting him. Connors tries to boost his power with the Lizard serum, but the experiment fails, leaving the Lizard as Octopus’ new henchman. Octopus then hires Spencer Smythe to build the Spider‑Slayers, a squad of robotic foes designed to hunt Spider‑Man.

Spider‑Man first confronts the Beetle during a bank robbery, only to be ambushed by the Spider‑Slayers. He defeats the machines, but Beetle escapes and later joins Octopus’ roster. Meanwhile, astronaut John Jameson is contaminated by a mysterious red‑black goo in space, adding another threat to the city.

Mysterio captures Spider‑Man in his lair, but the hero escapes and discovers a GPS left on Octopus’ discarded arms. Using the tracker, Spider‑Man learns Octopus has upgraded to Mark II arms and transformed Alistair Smythe into a human‑Spider‑Slayer hybrid.

Octopus sends the Green Goblin after Spider‑Man, leading to a high‑speed chase across New York. Venom intervenes, only to be driven off by Spider‑Man, while Eddie Brock warns of Carnage’s plan to annihilate the city. The symbiotes pour through a sky‑borne portal, but Spider‑Man defeats Carnage, who is sucked back into space. In the aftermath, J. Jonah Jameson publishes a triumphant Daily Bugle article praising Spider‑Man’s victory, only to have Betty Brant tear it up in disbelief.
