Summary
Albert Odyssey is a tactical RPG that blends classic turn‑based combat with the SNES’s Mode 7 tricks to give its 2‑D battlefields a pseudo‑3D feel. You guide a party across a top‑down overworld, slipping into sprawling battle screens where each move and spell is chosen from a menu before the enemy takes its turn. Victory yields experience, new abilities, and better gear you can buy in towns or loot from fallen foes. The game’s save points rely on the cartridge’s battery backup, so a defeat sends you back to the last checkpoint. A standout is Naoki Kodaka’s soundtrack – his first SNES RPG score – which was released as the *All Sounds of Albert Odyssey* album and even performed by the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra for a Game Music Concert. Later, the title resurfaced on the Satellaview as BS Albert Odyssey in 1996 and got a re‑release in 1998, giving fans a chance to download the whole adventure directly to their consoles.
Storyline
In Albert Odyssey, you step into the boots of Albert, a young heroic swordsman living in a fantasy realm teeming with monsters and mythical creatures. The world has been enjoying a fragile peace after a great war that ended many years ago, but a new threat looms as the dark magician Globus commands a militaristic faction seeking to subjugate the newly pacified nations and expand his empire. Albert teams up with his loyal friends and a band of hired mercenaries, journeying across diverse lands to rally support and gather strength. Their quest leads them to confront Globus and his forces head‑on, aiming to stop the looming large‑scale conflict before it erupts. The story blends classic RPG exploration with a high‑stakes battle between light and darkness.
