Summary
ActRaiser 2 drops the city‑building layer of its predecessor and dives straight into side‑scrolling action, letting you pilot the Master’s floating palace before leaping into the world below. The Master now sports fully functional wings, a sword, a deflective shield and a charge‑up magic system that consumes scrolls you find in each area – a big shift from the original’s pre‑selected spells. Each stage is split into two acts: the first pits you against hordes summoned by a lesser demon, while the second ramps up the challenge with monsters tied to one of the seven deadly sins. The game’s difficulty spikes with slower magic charging on higher settings and tougher enemies, and even the hidden Death Heim level is locked out of easy mode. Though it’s pure platforming, the title still feels epic, a fact reflected in its 1995 Total! ranking (38th) and its 2018 placement at #81 on Complex’s best‑SNES list.
Storyline
ActRaiser 2 – Chinmoku e no Seisen (commonly called ActRaiser 2) opens with the Master confronting Tanzra, the fallen servant who was once known as Satan in the Japanese version. Tanzra led a rebellion, was defeated, and his shattered body fell into the underworld, where his hatred fused with the seven deadly sins and their minions to resurrect his spirit. The Master, aided by his angelic allies called Crystallis, must purge these sins across a series of ironic stages, such as the city of Leon where citizens are thrown into the underground prison of Gratis for unpaid taxes under the doomed king Kolunikus.
After the first six sins are slain, the Tower of Babel (renamed Tower of Souls in the West) appears as the final arena, where the Master battles Destruction, a mechanized god embodying Pride. Defeating this false deity triggers the emergence of Death Heim, the underworld realm where Tanzra resides behind an impenetrable barrier. Using the Sky Castle as a battering ram, the Master crashes through the barrier, shattering the castle and sacrificing many angels.
In the climactic showdown, a wounded angel transfers the last of his power to the Master, who then faces the resurrected seven sins and Tanzra himself, frozen waist‑deep in an icy lake. Tanzra is finally slain, and the Master disappears as the credits roll. The ending declares that “The Master will live forever,” and a slowly eroding statue of him suggests a world growing independent of divine guidance, echoing the conclusion of the original ActRaiser.
