Summary
Acrobat Mission drops you into the cockpit of the Icarus, a fighter that spits a steady semi‑automatic laser called the Standard Shot. When you switch to the Wave Shot you get a spreading barrage that can be charged into a short‑range laser blast, while the Hurricane Shot circles the ship before launching a delayed energy ball.
You can only carry two bombs, but they’re mounted under the wings and will explode into a protective shield if enemy fire hits them—plus you can trigger them yourself at any moment. The ship’s jet exhaust shoots flames in the opposite direction of your movement, striking enemies on all eight angles and adding a visual flair to every dodge.
Getting hit sends the Icarus careening wildly, a timer flashing above the hull until it self‑destructs, and that explosion can take out nearby foes. Oddly, the hull is so tough that kamikaze ships or drifting debris simply bounce off without damage.
In Japan the arcade version ranked fourteenth on Game Machine’s September 1991 table‑unit chart, and a Brazilian player, Antonio R. Filho, still holds the world record with 279,900 points.
Storyline
In the year 2100 Earth’s environment has been ruined by humanity, prompting the exodus to Mars. Before leaving, the colonists install a Bio‑Computer designed to revive Earth’s ecosystem for a future return. Fifty years after the Martian terraforming effort, mysterious hostile UFOs appear and assault the fledgling colonies.
The Defence Agency’s Director‑General quickly assembles a task‑force army and equips it with cutting‑edge Icarus fighter ships. These craft are deployed in a massive dogfight against the invaders, a campaign the developers label "Acrobat Mission" because it pushes pilots beyond their technical limits.
The game’s opening text presents this backstory with its own quirky spelling, setting the stage for a high‑octane space‑combat experience on the SNES.
