Summary
The 7th Saga stands out on the SNES thanks to its crystal‑ball radar, a HUD element that lets you spot approaching foes in dungeons and on the overworld before they strike. That early warning feels like a cheat code for a game that otherwise punishes missteps.
Seven very different heroes—human, elf, dwarf, robot, demon, alien and another—each bring their own gear, spells and growth curves. You can team up with a fellow adventurer for a joint assault on a rune, or clash against them in a tense duel for the same prize.
Mode 7 swoops you from the exploration map into a turn‑based battle screen, while the world itself shifts between three distinct states: a safe town where you can shop and rest, a radar‑lit zone teeming with enemies, and the actual combat encounters.
What really sticks in my mind is the brutal difficulty that came from the Western localization: enemies sport inflated stats and your characters gain experience at a sluggish pace, turning every rune hunt into a high‑stakes gamble.
Storyline
The 7th Saga unfolds on the world of Ticondera, a realm where five millennia ago the divine Saro sealed the evil Gorsia using seven powerful runes. Those runes have since been scattered, and Lemele—Saro’s son and now a benevolent ruler—gathers seven apprentices from across the globe, handing each a Crystal Ball to aid their quest for the lost symbols.
After five years of training, the apprentices set out to retrieve the runes, battling tyrants, wizards, kings and dragons while a relentless bounty hunter named Pison stalks them, hired by a randomly chosen “traitor” among the group. When the final rune is claimed, Lemele reveals his true identity: he is Gorsia, who traveled forward in time, killed the real Lemele and used the apprentices to gather his own fragmented power.
The hero is thrust 5,000 years into the past, wandering through ruined towns to the advanced city of Melenam, the birthplace of the Tetsujin robots. There a rogue super‑Tetsujin destroys the city, and Saro’s disciples hand the player the seven runes to seal Gorsia’s power. Though the player defeats Gorsia, the dying villain strikes a final blow; 4,900 years later Saro reincarnates the soul as a newborn—none other than Lemele himself.
