Summary

E.V.O.: Search for Eden lets you design a creature and guide it through five distinct geological ages, from the Cambrian seas to the early Quaternary plains. Each era is broken into side‑scrolling stages where the environment dictates which body parts you can evolve—gills for underwater levels, wings for the Mesozoic sky, or powerful limbs for later mammals. Defeating foes drops meat that converts into evolution points, which you spend to upgrade any of the eight sections of your body, instantly changing both appearance and abilities.

Crystals scattered throughout the levels act as hidden treasure: some flash hints, others grant a massive point boost, and a few trigger temporary transformations. Health can be restored by eating meat, plants, or by evolving into a more resilient form. If your health hits zero, Gaia revives you on the map screen, but you lose about half your hard‑earned points—there’s no traditional game‑over screen.

The game grew out of Almanic’s original 46 Okunen Monogatari, with Takashi Yoneda (known for Actraiser) steering development and consulting teachers for accurate geology and biology. A built‑in battery saves progress, and the “Book of Life” can hold up to fifty custom creatures for later recall. The soundtrack, adapted from Koichi Sugiyama’s compositions by Motoaki Takenouchi, even features performances by the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra.

Storyline

E.V.O.: Search for Eden tells a mythical saga of life’s evolution on Earth, framed as a creation myth guided by Gaia, the personified planet and daughter of Sol. Gaia leads the player through five distinct geological ages, challenging them to evolve while confronting crystal‑infused creatures that become monstrously powerful and threaten the natural progression. In each age the player must defeat these crystal‑transformed species to keep evolution on track. The final Age, the Age of Eden, reveals Bolbox—a freakish, evil entity that has consumed the crystals, believing itself to be the first human while actually being a gigantic single‑celled organism. After defeating Bolbox, the player joins Gaia in Eden, receives the gift of intelligence, and learns that the crystals were placed by an advanced Martian civilization to accelerate evolution, later observed from afar.
