Summary

Xenon 2: Megablast drops you into a fast‑paced, vertically scrolling shoot‑em‑up where you pilot the sleek Megablaster to defuse three massive bombs hidden in wildly themed stages. The ship’s shield absorbs enemy fire and even the occasional crush from the scrolling scenery, and when it’s depleted a single hit ends your run. Six checkpoint positions per level let you respawn close to where you fell, while a limited pull‑back on the joystick lets you briefly reverse the scroll to dodge tight spots.

Each stage culminates in a boss that demands a specific strategy, and midway through the later levels a second boss appears to keep the tension high. Destroyed foes drop “Real Cash,” which you can trade twice per level at Crispin’s Swop Shop for power‑up tokens that boost weapons, speed, shield, or even let you dive into the background for a short burst.

The soundtrack is a high‑energy arrangement of Bomb the Bass’s "Megablast (Hip Hop on Precinct 13)" by David Whittaker, and the Master System port—programmed by Sean Cross and S. Green—was praised for graphics that rivaled 16‑bit rivals, despite a trimmed three‑level count. Virgin Games handled that version’s release in late 1991, delivering the same addictive weapon variety that made the original a critical hit.

Storyline

Set a thousand years after the original Xenon, Xenon 2: Megablast puts you in the cockpit of the star‑fighter Megablaster. Your mission is to hunt down five time‑spanning bombs that the vengeful Xenites have hidden throughout history. Each bomb lies at the end of a scrolling stage that ranges from the Cambrian seas to sleek, metallic spaceways of the future. Radiation from the devices mutates the resident lifeforms, turning them into aggressive foes you must battle. At the close of every level you face a boss; the first stage has a single boss while the later stages add a midway challenger before the final showdown, and defeating them defuses the bombs and thwarts the Xenites’ destructive plan.
