Summary
Woody Pop feels like a love letter to classic brick‑breaker games, but it throws a quirky twist into the mix with a custom paddle controller that ships with the Master System cartridge. The hardware requirement alone makes it a collector’s curiosity, especially since it was the final Japanese release to carry the Mark III branding on a My Card.
You guide a cartoon log spirit named Woody, ricocheting a ball against rows of ordinary and “mystery” blocks. Hitting the latter can unleash toy soldiers or wind‑up robots that bounce the ball back in unpredictable ways, while other blocks hand out power‑ups such as a Flameball, a skull, a hammer or even a magic potion. Some stages throw a moving train across the screen, and the bottom corners act as hidden bumpers that fling the ball upward.
The game packs 50 levels and, unlike most Breakout clones, lets you pick from up to three different subsequent stages after each clear, giving the experience a surprisingly non‑linear feel.
Storyline
Woody Pop – Shinjinrui no Block Kuzushi (often just called Woody Pop) drops you into the quirky world of a cartoon tree spirit shaped like a log. Woody’s mission is to roll a magical ball through the sprawling Mansion Toy Factory, smashing the block barriers that the hostile Mad Machine has erected. Each barrier crumbles under the ball’s impact, clearing a path deeper into the factory’s mechanical maze. The Mad Machine, the game’s relentless antagonist, constantly reshapes the obstacles to keep Woody at bay. Ultimately, Woody must dismantle the Mad Machine’s defenses and defeat the machine itself to restore peace to the toy factory.
