Summary

Wonder Boy in Monster Land (often just called Wonder Boy) feels like a hybrid arcade run‑and‑gun wrapped in a light RPG coat. I start each playthrough barefoot with only a short sword and a revival potion handed over by the mayor, then wander through twelve distinct zones—towns, deserts, islands, even underwater caverns—knocking on doors that might hide a shop, a trap, or the key to the next stage.

The game’s economy is surprisingly deep for a 1988 console title. Gold drops from enemies and hidden spots like floating clouds, and I can spend it on boots that boost my jump, armor that softens hits, shields that repel fire, or magical weapons such as rolling bombs, fireballs, tornadoes and a screen‑clearing thunder flash. Magic mantles grant temporary invisibility, while gauntlets double attack power for a short burst.

A quirky hourglass timer sits at the top of the screen; let it run out and Wonder Boy loses health, but collecting hourglasses or stopping at a tavern or hospital refills it. The pause button pulls up a status screen that neatly lists my current gear, gold, life hearts, and the quantities of each magic weapon I’ve collected.

Scoring isn’t just for bragging rights—every few points award an extra heart, keeping the adventure lively. Between battles I’ll pop into taverns for tips, consult fortune‑tellers for cryptic hints, or heal at hospitals, all while hunting for hidden letters, flutes, charms, and the elusive ruby that pepper the world with extra challenges and rewards.

Storyline

Wonder Boy in Monster Land picks up eleven years after the original Wonder Boy. After a decade of peace, a fire‑breathing MEKA Dragon and his army overrun Wonder Land, renaming it Monster Land. The frightened citizens, unable to fight, summon the teenage hero Bock Lee Temjin – known to friends as Tom‑Tom and now called Wonder Boy – to end the nightmare.

Tom‑Tom’s backstory is rooted in the first game: he rescued his girlfriend Tanya from the Evil King, earned the title Wonder Boy, and became a legend. The resurrected Evil King now inhabits the MEKA Dragon, who spreads mind‑controlling bracelets and employs the Brothers of Knight, Red and Blue, to enforce his rule. Determined, Tom‑Tom ventures across Monster Land, battling the dragon’s minions and gathering power.

The climax sees Tom‑Tom confronting the MEKA Dragon in its lair and defeating it, but the victory ends on a cliffhanger that leads directly into the next installment.
