Summary

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (known in Japan as Monster World II) turns the platform‑action formula into a shape‑shifting adventure. Each defeated dragon grants a new form—Lizard‑Man’s fire breath, Mouse‑Man’s wall‑crawling, Piranha‑Man’s free‑swim, Lion‑Man’s overhead slash, and Hawk‑Man’s sky‑ward glide—forcing you to backtrack and explore areas that were previously unreachable. The non‑linear map is littered with treasure chests, hidden items and shops where gold buys better gear, while a special "charm" meter unlocks otherwise unavailable equipment.

Your life meter is a series of hearts, and a single life potion can revive you when all hearts go black, adding a tense safety net before the continue screen appears. Passwords found in the town’s church let you resume later, preserving your current form, gear and gold but not secondary weapons or extra potions. The Master System version dazzles with colorful, cartoon‑like graphics and a rich sound palette, though sprite flicker and slippery controls were noted drawbacks.

Despite those quirks, the game earned Electronic Gaming Monthly’s 1989 Best Game of the Year for the Master System and saw a European re‑release on September 10, 2009 and a North American launch on November 9, 2009.

Storyline

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap picks up right after Wonder Boy in Monster Land. After slaying the Mecha Dragon, Wonder Boy is cursed and turned into Lizard‑Man, forcing him to hunt for the Salamander Cross – the only thing that can lift the curse. The adventure begins in the town of Alsedo, and the game shifts to a nonlinear layout where players explore Monster Land, gathering items and clues to unlock new areas. Each zone ends with a dragon boss; defeating one not only removes that foe but also transforms Wonder Boy into a new form with fresh abilities. He starts as Hu‑Man with full hearts and strong gear, then becomes Lizard‑Man, Mouse‑Man (who can walk on checkered mouse blocks), Piranha‑Man (free underwater movement), Lion‑Man (slashes vertically), and Hawk‑Man (flies but is harmed by water).
