Summary

Vigilante feels like a love‑letter to the classic arcade brawlers that came before it, echoing the spirit of Irem’s own Kung‑Fu Master while adding its own gritty street‑level flair. You step into the shoes of the lone hero, trading punches, kicks and the occasional nunchaku swing against a relentless gang of Rogues who throw knives, swing chains, roar on motorbikes and even try to choke you if you get too close. The action rolls through five distinct backdrops – a downtown street, a junkyard, the Brooklyn Bridge, a shadowy back‑alley and a rooftop construction site – each packed with its own set of hazards.

The Master System port, crafted by Arc System Works and released only in North America and Europe, adds a neat FM‑sound switch that upgrades the soundtrack, swaps the hostage’s name from Madonna to Maria, and rebrands the Skinheads as the Rogues, giving the cartridge its own quirky personality.

Storyline

Vigilante drops you into the gritty streets of downtown New York City, where a lone professional martial artist takes the law into his own hands. The hero becomes a vigilante to battle an evil gang known as the Skinheads, a crew ruled by a menacing figure called the Giant Devil. His mission is two‑fold: protect his own turf from the gang’s rampage and rescue the kidnapped Madonna, the woman he loves. The game’s storyline is a straightforward beat‑‘em‑up premise that pits the lone fighter against the Skinheads’ thugs as he fights his way through the city to save Madonna.
