Summary
Super Off Road on the Sega Master System lets up to three players race on twelve indoor tracks from a top‑down view. Winning races gives cash you can spend on engine upgrades, better tires or extra nitro, and the season ends when the money totals are compared. Continues are possible, but any added cash disappears after you insert another credit.
The game was one of the first to let you upgrade your truck with earnings, a feature John Morgan introduced and that many later copied. CPU trucks bear the names of the developers—Sam Powell, Earl Stratton and John Morgan—so you’re literally racing against the staff. The arcade’s Track Pak added eight new courses and a dune buggy, though the Master System version sticks with the original twelve.
Licensing quirks dropped the Ivan Stewart name on several home ports, so the title appears simply as Super Off Road. The SNES version swapped the endorsement for a Toyota logo, while the Master System cartridge stays brand‑free.
Reviews praised the deep upgrade system and tight multiplayer, giving it scores in the low‑80s percent range. It later resurfaced in Midway Arcade Treasures 3 and Midway Arcade Origins, preserving the classic feel. I still hear fans call it a benchmark for off‑road arcade fun.
