Summary

The Master System port of Streets of Rage feels like a stripped‑down but still gritty slice of early‑90s beat ’em up action. Released for PAL territories in mid‑1993, it drops the original’s intro music and limits you to a single player, yet it keeps the core of 40 distinct moves – headbutts, backslams, reverse kicks – and the same grab‑and‑throw feel that made the arcade classic famous. You can still pick up knives, bottles, pipes or a baseball bat, and snack on apples or chicken to refill energy, while only two foes appear on screen at once, forcing you to focus on stopping the swarm rather than getting overwhelmed.

A quirky twist is the unique Round 6 boss that never showed up on the console original, and the police‑car special attack that summons a vehicle to rain explosives on every enemy; you get one of these per life, with occasional police‑car power‑ups to replenish them. The bosses alone sport visible life bars, making each showdown feel weightier.

Behind the scenes, the game was born from a working title, DSWAT, linking it to Sega’s ESWAT universe, and its soundtrack bears Yuzo Koshiro’s signature techno‑house pulse, crafted with Roland TR‑606/707/808/909 timbres that still echo in retro‑gaming playlists today.

Storyline

In Streets of Rage for the Sega Master System, you step into the shoes of former police officers turned vigilantes. Adam Hunter, Axel Stone, and Blaze Fielding band together to free Wood Oak City from the grip of a ruthless crime syndicate. The organization, headed by the shadowy Mr. X, has seized control of the streets, forcing the ex‑cops to fight back. As the trio battles through gritty neighborhoods, they use their street‑fighting skills to dismantle the gang’s operations and restore order. Their mission is simple: take down the syndicate and reclaim their city.
