Summary
Streets of Rage 2, known in Japan as Bare Knuckle II, feels like a nostalgic remix of the original beat‑em‑up, but the Master System version takes its own path. While the core side‑scrolling action and the option for one‑ or two‑player brawls stay intact, the 8‑bit port swaps out several stages and drops Max Thunder entirely, leaving Axel, Blaze and the roller‑blading Eddie “Skate” to carry the fight. Each hero still boasts a unique Blitz Attack—triggered by double‑tapping a direction—and a health‑costing Special Attack that can hit enemies from all sides, adding a tactical layer to the chaos. A hidden Duel mode lets two players square off against each other, a neat extra that wasn’t in the arcade original. Critics of the era noted the graphics downgrade but still gave the Master System version respectable marks: 3.5/5 from AllGame, 85% in Mean Machines Sega, and a solid 90% in Sega Pro.
Storyline
One year after the original Streets of Rage, Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding and Adam Hunter had gone their separate ways—Axel as a part‑time bodyguard, Blaze teaching dance, and Adam back on the police force with his younger brother Eddie "Skate" Hunter. The peace shatters when Skate returns from school to find his home wrecked and a photo of Adam chained to a wall beside the returning villain Mr. X, signalling the Syndicate’s revenge. Blaze alerts Axel, and the two vow to rescue Adam; they are soon joined by Skate and a professional wrestler named Max Thunder, forming a quartet that battles from Wood Oak City to Mr. X’s island hideout, confronting his enforcer Shiva along the way. The game has a single ending: Mr. X is defeated, Adam is saved, and the heroes escape in a helicopter.
