Summary
Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin delivers fast‑paced side‑scrolling platform action that leans heavily on Spider‑Man’s trademark agility. I spend most of the run swinging webs in every direction, leaping over gaps, and throwing punches or web‑shots at the assorted thugs, guard dogs, bats and even a gorilla that pops up as a surprise hazard.
The core loop is simple but demanding: run, jump, swing, and fight while snatching any useful items you can find. Web‑swinging feels surprisingly responsive for a 1991 Master System title, and the variety of enemies forces you to mix close‑range punches with well‑timed web attacks.
What makes the Master System version stand out is its rarity in North America. It arrived as a European import with no official US box or manual, making it one of the last Master System games officially sold here. Levels were reshaped and new cut‑scenes were added, including a brief cameo from Doctor Strange. Even on the easiest setting the game is tough to finish, and although Mary Jane isn’t kidnapped, she does appear at the very end if you manage the best possible outcome.
Storyline
In the Sega Master System title *Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin*, the crime lord Kingpin plants a nuclear bomb in New York City and frames Spider‑Man for the crime. The villain gives the city only 24 hours to locate the device, forcing Peter Parker into a frantic race against time.
The bomb’s deactivation keys have been scattered among Spider‑Man’s most notorious foes—Doctor Octopus, Sandman, the Lizard, Hobgoblin, Vulture, Mysterio, Electro and Venom. As the player, you guide Spider‑Man through a series of battles, defeating each adversary to reclaim a key and inch closer to stopping the explosion.
Mid‑game, Venom kidnaps Spider‑Man’s wife, Mary Jane Parker, adding a personal stake to the mission. After gathering all the keys, Peter disarms the bomb, rescues Mary Jane just before Kingpin tries to drop her into an acid pit, and ultimately saves New York from devastation.
