Summary
Speedball drops you onto a steel‑walled, 160‑by‑90‑foot arena that feels like a futuristic handball rink. Two warp tunnels sit in the side walls, instantly shuttling the ball from one end to the other, while fixed bounce domes ricochet it in unpredictable ways.
You control a single outfield player at a time, picking a captain who starts with a boost in stamina, power or skill. Hits drain an opponent’s stamina, slowing them down, and a more powerful player delivers harder blows. Skill‑rich captains also make computer teammates more aggressive.
The ball is launched from the centre in a random direction; you can tap the fire button for a quick throw or hold it for a high lob, then jump to catch it—though jumping leaves you vulnerable. Random coins and power‑ups appear, including an electrified ball that harms the other side and a teleport that sends the ball to a teammate.
Matches can be single‑player knockout runs or two‑player league battles, each ending when time runs out and the team with the most goals wins.
The Master System version earned a 90% score from Joypad and helped the title snag the 1989 Golden Joystick Game of the Year award.
