Summary
Sonic Spinball swaps the usual side‑scroll for a massive pinball arena, turning Sonic himself into the ball. Dr. Robotnik’s fortress becomes a series of looping tables packed with giant flippers, steam‑vent bumpers and steep ramps. The Master System version, released only in Brazil and Europe, pares down the graphics but adds a few platform‑style bonus rooms. Four self‑contained levels each challenge you to guide Sonic toward the top while avoiding the drain.
You steer Sonic with the bottom flippers and can nudge him in mid‑air using the directional pad for tighter control after each bounce. A status strip across the top flashes hints for the boss at the summit of each level and counts the remaining Chaos Emeralds. After collecting all emeralds, a boss appears; each one requires a specific flipper pattern, hinted at by the strip. Defeating the boss launches a classic pinball bonus round with three balls, points, and a tilt feature that can lock the flippers if overused. An extra life is awarded at 20 million points, and you start with three lives, losing one each time you fall through the drain.
Because it arrived at the very end of the Master System’s life, the cartridge sold poorly and now fetches a premium among collectors. Its quirky mix of pinball physics and Sonic speed makes it a memorable footnote in the series. Finding a copy feels like holding a piece of pinball‑powered Sonic history.
Storyline
Sonic Spinball (often just called Sonic Spinball) drops players into the world of the Sonic the Hedgehog TV series. Doctor Robotnik has erected a volcanic fortress that uses the volcano’s magma and pinball‑style defenses to turn the animals of planet Mobius into robot slaves, while the Chaos Emeralds keep the volcano stable. Sonic and Tails launch an aerial attack, but Sonic is knocked into the surrounding waters and resurfaces in the caves beneath the stronghold. He battles through the defenses, steals back the Chaos Emeralds, and frees the captive animals; without the Emeralds the volcano erupts, destroying Robotnik’s base. In the final showdown Sonic wrecks Robotnik’s escape ship, Tails pulls Sonic to safety, and Robotnik plummets into the volcano, which sinks into the ocean and blows up.
