Summary
Sonic Chaos lets you dash through three‑act zones that end in a Robotnik henchbot showdown, with the final zone pitting you against the mad doctor himself. Rings act as a shield, and smashing the occasional TV monitor drops power‑ups like speed shoes, a one‑hit shield, or extra lives, while a 100‑ring haul teleports you to a hidden stage for a Chaos Emerald.
The game’s biggest twist is the playable Tails, who can hover and fly over hazards, while Sonic retains his signature Super Peel‑Out from Sonic CD and can snag Rocket Shoes for a brief flight. Each character’s abilities encourage a slightly different rhythm, turning familiar 8‑bit routes into a faster, more expansive sprint.
When it first hit PAL markets in ’93, reviewers praised the level flow and the fresh two‑player option. Retrospectives, however, note a sluggish framerate, bland level design and a forgettable soundtrack, suggesting the title is mainly worth revisiting for die‑hard Sonic collectors or anyone curious about an 8‑bit platformer that tried to push speed a bit further.
Storyline
In Sonic Chaos for the Sega Master System, players can choose either Sonic the Hedgehog or his fox sidekick Miles “Tails” Prower. The game is divided into six worlds that must be cleared in order to recover the stolen Chaos Emeralds.
Dr. Robotnik has taken the red Chaos Emerald—and the others—to build nuclear weapons and to seize world domination. Sonic (or Tails) races through each stage, battling Robotnik’s traps and minions, with the ultimate goal of retrieving the gems and stopping the mad scientist’s plan.
