Summary

Playing the Master System version of Shadow of the Beast feels like stepping into a living painting. The developers crammed up to twelve layers of parallax scrolling into a system that normally struggled with colour, delivering a backdrop that can show 128 hues at once. Even on the modest hardware, the alien landscapes stretch across eight hostile regions, each populated by more than a hundred distinct creatures. The visual punch is so strong that you can almost taste the knuckle‑crunch of the combat.

The soundtrack, composed by David Whittaker, adds a cinematic weight that belies the console’s limitations. Using a Korg M1 synth sampled at 20 kHz, the music weaves six main themes that shift with each scene, giving the game an atmospheric pulse. The sound design was praised by Sega Pro, which called the audio “superlative” for a Master System title.

Behind the scenes, Reflections’ team avoided the blitter entirely, opting for sprite multiplexing to keep the action fluid. This hard‑won speed allowed the player to start with simple punches and gradually unlock fireballs and even a laser gun, keeping the difficulty steep but rewarding. Martin Edmondson has said he deliberately aimed for a tough experience, and the result still feels unforgiving by today’s standards.

The iconic cover, painted by Roger Dean, hints at the epic scope before you even press start. While Sega Pro loved the graphics and sound, it noted the control scheme felt a bit awkward on the Master’s single‑button layout. Still, the combination of visual flair, a haunting score, and relentless combat makes Shadow of the Beast a standout on a console not known for such ambition.

Storyline

In the Master System game Shadow of the Beast, the protagonist is a man named Aarbron who is kidnapped as a child and transformed by dark magic into a monstrous servant of the beast lord Maletoth.

His humanity flickers back when he watches an execution and recognizes the condemned man as his father, sparking a vow of revenge that drives him across hostile lands and through relentless forces of Maletoth.

The climax pits Aarbron against a colossal minion whose only visible limbs are a massive hand and foot; defeating this creature lifts the curse known as the "Shadow of the Beast" and restores him to a more human shape. The game's tagline echoes his resolve: "From beyond the edge of darkness the warrior cries revenge."
