Summary
When I first saw the arcade flyer for *My Hero*—the Japanese title *Seishun Scandal*—the urban grit jumped out at me. Coreland’s beat‑'em‑up takes the Kung‑Fu Master formula and drops it onto a modern city street, complete with rival gangs instead of temples. The Master System version, released a year later, trims the experience to three looping stages; the ninjas and the odd ape‑human foes from the arcade don’t make the cut, a compromise forced by the tiny Sega Card. Despite the cut‑down roster, the game kept its punchy graphics and surprisingly tough puzzle moments, earning it the top spot on *Game Machine*’s July 1985 table‑arcade chart. *Computer Gamer* praised the setting and visual flair, calling it a “basic but still quite enjoyable” twist on the kung‑fu genre.
Storyline
Seishun Scandal on the Sega Master System opens on a city street where the hero—named Takeshi in the Japanese version and Steven on the European arcade flyer—watches a street thug snatch his girlfriend, Remy (called Mari in Japan). He chases the thief, battling waves of thugs and, midway through the level, can rescue a captive bystander who fights alongside him until he falls. After leaping across platforms and dodging fireballs, Steven reaches a beach where he confronts the boss who holds Remy; the boss is defeated after ten hits, ending the stage. The same formula repeats for two more bosses, each with distinct settings. The second stage shifts to an Edo‑period ninja theme, while the third adopts a sci‑fi vibe inspired by *Planet of the Apes*, featuring ape and human enemies.
